Creativity

A key ingredient to successful product development is a creative team. As creativity is such an intangible and hard to measure quality in both an individual and in a team it is a wise strategy to optimize the chances for creativity to develop in multiple teams. Nurture many different perspectives and allow for different points of view and creativity will follow.

Autonomous teams are coming into fashion for this very reason, a lot of people with aligned goals has a much higher chance to be creative compared to a lot of people given top down instructions. To ensure getting the most out of these teams it is critical to allow these teams to both be and work differently. Template the team structure or their way of working and questioning and reflection will decrease, and highly likely creativity as well.

Optimizing any process through centralization has drastic impact on the bandwidth of creativity. While there are numerous benefits as well they need to be weighted against the loss of creativity, typically creativity lose because of it's nature to be so hard to quantify. Construction of hybrids of centralized and decentralized entities in the organization can create the best of both worlds but it requires careful design and execution.

Culture can be both a great enabler and inhibitor of creativity. As an invisible guide for how things are done there needs to be a deliberate thinking about creativity inserted into the culture to avoid staleness or premature dismissal of creative suggestions.
