Prototype
A prototype can be used for early evaluation of anything related to a future product. Design, materials or function, just about anything can be evaluated in a prototype.
The prototype is different from a product in the sense that it must not meet many of the qualities we expect from a product, mainly that it doesn't have to be functional at all. The prototype might be used or tested internally only or with special security restrictions, or might be displayed to a consumer but not sold.
