Control

"If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough."
- Mario Andretti
(Legendary formula 1 race car driver)

"Control", the word gives a wide range of associations depending on who you ask. There can be both to much and to little, think of "out of control" and "control freak". The word itself implies some kind of influence over a thing or group, it might be viewed as positive when running a process in a factory but is it really beneficial when working with people? No, it's good to be in control of the kitchen oven but with people it degrades the relationship and the possibility to build trust (imagine thinking of in control in a marriage).

A considerable cost of being in control is that the cost of processing the information needed to have control can limit efficiency and creativity. The gains of being in control can for some be a good feeling, if you don't like surprises this might be a preference, but will also lose the good, the tings you couldn't imagine but someone else surprised you with.

In any normal enterprise your faith and trust should be high enough in your co-workers to avoid the need for control. Only in specific cases when proven otherwise should you apply control.

The operations of your systems should be under control, not your teams.

Mario Andretti
