Albert's law
“Lack of statistics is to hide inconvenient facts.”
- Albert Bertilsson 2018
Inspired by the Jorge Luis Borges quote: "Democracy is an abuse of statistics." while reading about how Venezuela stopped reporting on child mortality.
In modern organizations there is rarely no such thing as lack of data or readily available statistics and the capacity to process data is immense. If information presented is not supported by data. Presenting statistics is not the same as displaying the truth or as Mark Twain put it "There are lies, damned lies and statistics.".
Whenever you consider actions look at data first, draw conclusions. Compare your conclusions with colleagues and see if you draw similar conclusions. If there is no data to be found anywhere (not necessarily within your company) you are probably on to something very interesting, design an experiment!
Disclaimer: No data has been gathered and no analysis has been done to verify or falsify Albert's law.
